The Selection: Book One Review
Hi Friends!
I have finally picked up the beloved Selection series to ready, as a buddy read, for the month of July!
I finished book one, self-titled The Selection and pretty much ate it up like candy, it was addictive and so good! I seriously missed out these past eight years that this book has been out for.
The Selection follows our main character America Singer, who is one of the 35 girls picked to be part of the Selection process that involves Prince Maxon dating these girls to find his future wife and princess to Illea. (Talk about DRAMA).
First things first, this book gave me serious Hunger Games vibes. This book has a caste system that operates similar to the Districts in The Hunger Games. Caste One is the royal family with Caste Eight being the criminals, the lowest of the low, and the homeless. America is in the middle and is a Five. This reminded me of the Districts system in The Hunger Games because the higher number you are, the worse things are for you and everyone takes the Caste/District system seriously.
Also, with these girls in the Selection, it's as if they are fighting to win the Hunger Games and be crowned champion. And let me tell you, these girls fight DIRTY!
I loved the story and the pacing. Although I will say that Aspen is annoying and had his chance and needs to let America do whatever the hell she wants. I love America's dedication to her family and how she wants to stay in the Selection as long as she can to be able to help her family, since they are being generously compensated for her time away. Also, she is convinced she will never have feelings for our dear Prince Maxon but we all know how that is going to go.
Prince Maxon is the sweetest and should be protected at ALL costs. He is so vulnerable and honest with America and it is nice to see that he is humble and does not fit the stereotype that so many people assume with him being the Prince and royalty. Maxon and America immediately develop a friendship and become allies, and it's the cutest thing to ever exist.
These books give me the trashy and corny vibe and I am here for it. Mostly because the story is really sweet and addictive, the writing is phenomenal and the story really sucks you in. I mean who doesn't love to read a book that is basically like The Bachelorette except involving royalty?
