The Heir: Eadlyn's Reign

Hi Friends!

I recently started the fourth book in the Selection series, The Heir, which follows King Maxon and Queen America's eldest child (and daughter), Eadlyn. Eadlyn is a twin and very bitter that her brother, Ahren, was born several minutes after her. She feels that she is the most powerful person and is very, very snotty and bratty and overall unlikeable. Due to resistant beginning in response to the Castes being dismantled, Maxon suggests that Eadlyn have her own Selection to find a husband, but of course Eadlyn does not want that and puts up quite the fight. Eventually, she agrees to give it a shot but for only three months. After all, she is the most powerful and wants to reign on her own.

I love that Eadlyn challenges the rule of the Monarchy in regards to needing to be married to rule, and how she does not feel she needs a male to help her rule, but she is also very stubborn (much like both her parents) and needs to have more of an open mind around certain things.

I was particularly frustrated at the end when she challenged Ahren about his feelings for Camille, because she wanted to keep him to herself, and then he runs off and gets married to spite her and puts her in his place in his letter. I loved that and props to him for saying the truth. I hope she actually listens.

Guys, this really was my least favorite. It was just ...not good

Eadlyn is just so unlikable. She is rude, arrogant, and selfish. She is bratty and spoiled. Her view of all of the guys is that they are less than her and every time she did something to redeem herself, it was quickly followed by another bad trait of hers. I just could not get passed it. She treated her maid awful and was very passive aggressive with her (did you not learn anything from your mother?) and she was so rude to the boys, no wonder a lot of them were questioning her morals. I felt like there was NO character development on her end throughout the entire story and that left me bored. The first three books were full of action and development, enough so that it kept you wanting more. But this book did not fit the bill. I would have rather seen a fourth book about America and Maxon as they started their reign together and how they dismantled the Caste system.

And the heart attack at the end with America? Was that necessary? I swear if they kill her off it will be the WORST ending to a series and I will lose my shit. The love that was shown by Maxon to her when she was in the hospital was BEAUTIFUL. And all of her friends surrounding her and showing their love as well as the Selected, was amazing. Eadlyn should take some notes on that.
